About the MAC and Doug & Nancy Mahlum

In 1991, Doug Mahlum began the planning, design and development of the Montana Athletic Club-Bigfork, along with his partner, Jack Tawney.

The Montana Athletic Club began construction in September of 1992 and completed in March of 1993 with 21,000 SF. In 2003, a major expansion added an aerobics studio and increased the weight room space, adding another 3,600 SF. In 2007, the MAC went through a major interior remodel, including all new weight equipment, furnishings, tile and flooring. In 2014, another 6,500 SF was added, including a Physical Therapy unit (River Bend Physical Therapy), a new functional training area, Mind/Body and Spin Studios and Pilates Studio. Another round of new cardio equipment was added.

In 2001, The Peak Health and Wellness Center in Great Falls, Montana was completed. The 54,000 square foot facility was built as a partnership between Benefis Healthcare, the local hospital, Mr. Mahlum and Mr. Tawney. The facility has undergone 3 major expansions, bringing the SF up to 74,000 SF to keep up with member demand.

The Wave, in Whitefish, Montana started out as a 55,000 square foot, 7.2 million dollar facility. Acting as an consultant, Doug handled the entire project for the Wave Board of Directors. In 2007, it was determined an expansion was needed and 5,000 square feet was added to the weight room, mind/body area and a personal training studio. In 2014, a 10,500 SF addition was completed, adding a comprehensive child care, another aerobics studio, family change rooms, boy’s/girl’s locker rooms and a new check in area. The Wave is a community center for Whitefish.

In the summer of 2006, Mr. Mahlum, along with Jack Tawney and Charlie Eisman, purchased the Peak Health and Wellness in Missoula, Montana. This 50,000 square foot facility was built in 1983 and was state-of-the-art for its time. In 2009, the partners began construction on a $4.9 million indoor tennis/racquetball/squash complex. Completed in September of 2010, It is the largest indoor tennis facility in Montana and the premier racquetball/squash/handball center. In 2012, the partners purchased an old historical site in downtown Missoula and converted it into a 22,000 SF urban fitness center, with a very positive reception. The main facility, on Blue Mountain Road, just completed a $1.2 million addition of the weight area, making it the state-of-the-art facility in Montana.

Doug has done consulting work with several facilities, including sites in England. He is currently working on a 40,000 SF facility in Conway, New Hampshire. He is married to Nancy (his partner in the MAC) and has two children, Bridger and Colter, both of whom have graduated from college and are off on their own career paths.
